Идиома common ground cостоит из двух слов: common, что означает общий, и ground – земля. Таким образом, получаем нечто вроде «общей земли». На русский же эту идиому можно перевести как «общий интерес». Вот два определения из англоязычного словаря: a foundation for mutual understanding и an agreed basis, accepted by both or all parties, for identifying issues in an argument. Например, common ground between – будет означать «общие интересы» с кем кем-либо. Ну или «точка соприкосновения» (как вариант – point of contact). Хотя, как мне кажется, это подходит больше для момента спора. Приведем несколько примеров:

• The leaders failed to find common ground on the defensive side of this possible bargain.
• There is a great deal of common ground between management and trade unions on this issue.
• Often parents and teenagers find they have little common ground.
